091213 -FN6 / Animal Justice

It cannot be gainsaid that virtually all animals feel a natural impulse to defend against a clear and present, immediate attack on one’s self or one’s offspring. To this limited extent, defensive violence appears to be “natural” and at least excusable or perhaps tolerable. However, modelling human behaviour on animal conduct is problematic; not because we are supposedly morally higher than they but because our instincts and calibrated responses aren’t as accurate as theirs, rendering us poor practitioners of what might by called “natural justice”. As a result we are left to the desires and devices of our hearts which are far worse than the simplicity of animals.
